Smoking was practiced by both men and women in the Luba tribe of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). They used pipes, sometimes elaborately decorated, for smoking hemp (refined cannabis) in the 12th century and tobacco in the 15th century. While locally grown tobacco was harsh, snuff was more common. The Luba tribe also had unique artistic expressions, like the Lukasa memory board.
